Be a Responsible Pet Owner

Due to an increase in dog bites and complaints, the Township of Essa is reminding its residents to be responsible pet owners - keep your furry friend on a leash.

Being a responsible dog owner is important.  As a responsible dog owner you must provide food, water, shelter and medical care to your dog.  It’s also a great idea to have your pet microchipped.

In the Township of Essa every dog over 12 weeks of age must be licensed.  Dog tags can be purchased online at www.essatownship.on.ca for $25.00.  Essa’s Canine Control By-law 2006-18 governs dog owner responsibilities in the Township.  Essa respectfully requests that all dog owners familiarize themselves with our Canine Control By-law, available on our website.  Dogs are not permitted to run at large in Essa - you must keep your dog on a leash when it is not in your fenced back yard.   By-law 2006-18 also requires dog owners to pick up after their pets, even when you’re on your own property.

Being a responsible pet owner also means respecting others around you.  Please be aware of the noise your dog creates, and limit how long your dog is left outside if they are barking.

Did you know that Essa has an Off-Leash Dog Park in Angus at the Glen Eton/Wildflower Park!  Off-Leash Dog Parks offer dogs the ability to socialize with other dogs and run free without you worrying about your pet getting hurt or running away.  The Off-Leash Dog Park is to be used at your own risk.
